Affordable Care Act Consumer Alert: Choose Your Tax Preparer Wisely

ACA photo

The IRS urges you to choose your tax professional carefully in response to reports from last year describing unscrupulous preparers. In some cases, these preparers were instructing their clients to make individual shared responsibility payments directly to that preparer. In some cases, this was happening even though the taxpayer had Medicaid or other health coverage. Under this circumstance, the taxpayer didn’t need to make the shared responsibility payment at all. In some parts of the country, unscrupulous return preparers were targeting taxpayers with limited English proficiency and, in particular, those who primarily speak Spanish.

Most people don’t owe the payment at all because they have health coverage or qualify for a coverage exemption. However, if you owe a payment, remember that it should be made only with your tax return or in response to a letter from the IRS.  The payment should never be made directly to an individual or return preparer.

Preparers who inappropriately ask for direct payment use a variety of invalid reasons that include:

  • telling individuals that they must make an individual shared responsibility payment directly to the preparer because of their immigration status
  • promising to lower the payment amount if the client pays it directly to the preparer
  • demanding money from individuals who are exempt from the individual shared responsibility payment

If you are not a U.S. citizen or national, and are not lawfully present in the United States, you are exempt from the individual shared responsibility provision and do not need to make a payment. For this purpose, an immigrant with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status is considered not lawfully present and therefore is exempt. You may qualify for this exemption even if you have a social security number.

If you believe you have been targeted by an unscrupulous preparer or you have been financially affected by a tax return preparer’s misconduct or improper tax preparation practices, you can report it to the IRS on Form 14157, Complaint: Tax Return Preparer.

You can use our Interactive Tax Assistant tool – Am I required to make an Individual Shared Responsibility Payment? to help determine if you qualify for an exemption or owe the payment.

Choose a Tax Preparer Carefully

The vast majority of tax professionals provide honest, high-quality service. However, the IRS encourages taxpayers to avoid dishonest and unscrupulous preparers by choosing their preparer wisely. To help, the IRS offers a new, online, searchable public directory of tax preparers who currently hold professional credentials recognized by the IRS or certain other qualifications.

For information on choosing a preparer, filing a complaint about an unscrupulous preparer, or using the new directory, see our Choosing a Tax Professional page on IRS.gov.

Using tax preparation software is the easiest way to file a complete and accurate tax return. Visit the E-File Options page on IRS.gov for information.

IRS Tax Tips for Deducting Gifts to Charity

The holiday season often prompts people to give money or property to charity. If you plan to give and want to claim a tax deduction, there are a few tips you should know before you give. For instance, you must itemize your deductions. Here are six more tips that you should keep in mind:

1. Give to qualified charities. You can only deduct gifts you give to a qualified charity. Use the IRSSelect Check tool to see if the group you give to is qualified. You can deduct gifts to churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and government agencies. This is true even if Select Check does not list them in its database.

2. Keep a record of all cash gifts.  Gifts of money include those made in cash or by check, electronic funds transfer, credit card and payroll deduction. You must have a bank record or a written statement from the charity to deduct any gift of money on your tax return. This is true regardless of the amount of the gift. The statement must show the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution. Bank records include canceled checks, or bank, credit union and credit card statements. If you give by payroll deductions, you should retain a pay stub, a Form W-2 wage statement or other document from your employer. It must show the total amount withheld for charity, along with the pledge card showing the name of the charity.

3. Household goods must be in good condition.  Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances and linens. These items must be in at least good-used condition to claim on your taxes. A deduction claimed of over $500 does not have to meet this standard if you include a qualified appraisal of the item with your tax return.

4. Additional records required.  You must get anacknowledgment from a charity for each deductible donation (either money or property) of $250 or more. Additional rules apply to the statement for gifts of that amount. This statement is in addition to the records required for deducting cash gifts. However, one statement with all of the required information may meet both requirements.

5. Year-end gifts.  Deduct contributions in the year you make them. If you charge your gift to a credit card before the end of the year it will count for 2015. This is true even if you don’t pay the credit card bill until 2016. Also, a check will count for 2015 as long as you mail it in 2015.

6. Special rules.  Special rules apply if you give a car, boat or airplane to charity. If you claim a deduction of more than $500 for a noncash contribution, you will need to file another form with your tax return. Use Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions to report these gifts.

The Eccentric Dr. Mike Adenuga, Jr.

Mike Adenuga

Founder of Globacom Dr. Mike Adenuga, Jr. is the second richest Nigerian in the world.  Mr. Alhaji Aliko Dangote is the first richest Nigerian in the world and the richest black billionaire for 2015 in the world.  When I started writing about the top eleven black billionaires he was the first blog, so go back and read about him.  Globacom is a multinational telecommunications carrier base in Lagos, Nigeria.  At present this company spans over four countries in West Africa:  Nigeria, The Republic of Benin, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Dr. Adenuga also runs Conoil Producing, the first Nigerian company to strike oil in commercial quantities in the early 1990s. Today it is Nigeria’s largest oil exploration company.  Conoil Producing has grown from Nigeria’s number one marketer to becoming an intimidating force in the petroleum industry.  Mike earned his first million selling lace and distributing Coca-Cola Products at the age of 26.  Dr. Adenuga is now worth $4.2 billion dollars and is the world’s third richest billionaire n the world. He has invested $1 billion dollars in submarine cable connecting Nigeria to the rest of the world.

So let’s take a sneak peek at this man’s world.  Dr. Adenuga, Jr. is simply in his own world – eccentric, strange and unusual.  He will not play second fiddle to anyone.  Mike rules his world and dominates his environment.  You can find him still working in his office at 2am and if you are large and in charge at one of his companies he expects the same work ethic from you.  Don’t be shocked if you get a call on one of his late night or early morning (depending how you look at it) work sessions and you are expected to come into the office.  All of his calls and mail goes through someone else before he takes a call or reads mail.

Even though Dr. Adenuga is a true workaholic he does sponsor events like the Glo Slide & Bounce.  the outstanding entertainment includes PSquare, Wizkid, Flavour plus others well known artists.  The Slide & Bounce concert will be held in 11 locations across the country: Ikeja, Ikorodu, Egbeda, Surulere and Victoria Island in Lagos; Ibadan; Port Harcourt; Abeokuta; Ijebu Ode; Benin and Abuja.  Mike also launched literacy writing competition named Glo Literature Prize for Undergraduate Students.  Believe it or not he rarely attends any of his events.  When he does go to an event he doesn’t smile he talks to no one, no matter how important you are, he doesn’t eat or drink anything and he is always surrounded by his bodyguards.  So what puts a smile on this mans face?  How does he relax?  He enjoys Chinese food and Champagne. He also loves his women busty and full figured.  Don’t take that literally! Dr, Mike Adenuga, Jr. is married with children.

Who Wants To Be A Billionaire – Aliko Dangote

Aliko Dangote 1

Mr. Aliko Dangote is the richest black billionaire in the world.  I was simply floored two weeks ago when I watched a Black Business Network seminar and learned that 16.3% of the people in the world are millionaires.  That is 1.1% of all households globally.  Blacks consist of 13.6% of the worlds population and only 1.4% of the millionaires of the world.  Amazing right, but wait this is not what floored me.  What about the billionaires? 1% of the world’s population are billionaires that is 1,826 people, wait only 11 of that 1% are black.  Okay I’m lightheaded now then Delxino Wilson de Briano says the 9 of the 11 live in Africa.  Yep, I hit the floor.

So the question that has bothered me for the past two weeks is why?  Why are our percentages so low and why do the majority of our wealthiest people live in Africa?  I have decided to take my time and read about all 11 of them and try to figure out what they are doing that I am not doing.  Now I am not trying to be a billionaire, but I do want to run the race to be one.  Confused?  Okay this is how I look at it.  God put me here to serve a purpose.  His Word says that a borrower is the slave to the lender and that everything I need to be successful is already in me.  I figure if I train to run the race on a daily basis, when it comes time for me to compete I can perform what I trained for.  One of the 11 billionaires is Ms. Oprah Winfrey.  Did you know her very first job was in a local grocery store?  Yes, so don’t tell me it is not possible.  I hope you learn as much as I do about these people.

Mr. Aliko Dangote is the richest black man in the world has made his fortune in cement, sugar and flour.  Dangote Cement is publicly traded selling at this writing at $170.04 a share, NASCON refineries is $6.00 a share and sugar is $6.62 a share.  He made his first fortune trading commodities 3 decades ago with a loan from his uncle.  The Dangote Group is based in Lagos, Nigeria and has companies in 13 other African countries.

Mr. Dangote starts his day at 5am.  He says starting that early allows him time to get a lot done and be very productive including a 6am haircut if needed.  He also fits in some time to exercise which helps his stress level.  Aliko says, “Exercise is better than any medicine I can take”.  He also says he sleeps about 4 to 5 hours where most of us need 6 to 8 hours his sleep time is very sound.  Mr. Dangote spends more time sleeping on his jet than in his bed. With all the invitations he gets on a daily basis to weddings, conferences and other functions he tries to spend 20 minutes at each one he has time to attend.

There are a two books about Aliko Dangote, Aliko Mohammad Dangote: The Biography of the Richest Black Person in the World

Reverse Mortgages are not Risk-Free

Reverse Mortgages are not Risk-Free.

The reverse mortgage ads you may have read or seen on TV sound like great solutions to older homeowners’ financial strain, but can you trust them?

Not entirely, warns the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Many of these ads lead seniors to believe reverse mortgages are risk-free. If you’re thinking of getting a reverse mortgage, learn what the ads don’t tell you and what the risks are first.

If you or a loved one already has a reverse mortgage, take these three steps to protect yourself and make a plan for the future.

Sprint and Verizon Agree to Illegal Billing Pay-Back

This article was released by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on May 12, 2015.

Sprint and Verizon will refund $120 million to consumers harmed by illegal billing practices

BY

Today we’re announcing settlements with Sprint and Verizon, who illegally billed consumers over a hundred million dollars in unauthorized third-party charges. If approved, these settlements will return $120 million directly to affected consumers.

Sprint’s and Verizon’s customers became victims by clicking on ads for “free” digital content such as ring tones or daily horoscopes, and were then charged without their consent. Many people did not know that third parties could add charges to their wireless bills. The illegal billing often continued undetected for months.

Sprint’s and Verizon’s billing systems invited illegal third-party charges and the companies did little or nothing to root them out. Sprint and Verizon also failed to properly track and respond to consumer complaints about these charges, while collecting hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue by serving as payment processors for these third-party companies. Sprint and Verizon received a 30-40 percent cut of every third-party charge.

Under the Dodd-Frank Act, we can hold companies, including payment processors and lenders, accountable when they engage in unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices.

If you believe you may have been impacted

Verizon customers can submit claims for refunds at www.CFPBSettlementVerizon.com and learn more about the settlement by calling (888) 726-7063. Sprint customers can submit claims for refunds at www.SprintRefundPSMS.com or learn more about the settlement by calling (877) 389-8787.

Why You Shouldn’t Believe The Hype

Funny I am working on a business venture when this song by Chuck D and Flavor Flav came up.  I couldn’t resist the temptation because so many people so believe The Hype.  I CAN’T  You can’t what?  You can’t own your own business.  You can’t get out of debt.  I can’t understand the stock game.  YES YOU CAN!!!

One of the things I do on a daily basis is turn on YouTube.  It may not have everything, but there is so much on there you will find something you are looking for.  Okay I’m real excited about this point.  Did you know that there are audiobooks on YouTube free of charge.  You won’t tell me that you will never understand business because it is there free.  So what is the real problem why you are not changing your life.  You will tell me that you are tired of having more month than money.  You will tell me I just need enough to get by and have a little extra just for me.  No, Don’t Believe The Hype!!!  There is so much more to life.  The media has us pulled into the hype.  When I watch TV I analyze everything. The time of day, the channel and the message.  I watch how the commercials are done, who they are advertising to and why they chose this particular station.  Yes it is all a plan to put you further in debt.  Now understand, I’m not saying that everything is bad because it is not.  If you are not working and your at home watching BET be assured you will see a commercial about going to school.  Targeted? Yes! While you are sitting around waiting for that dream to come true, educate yourself.

Find your passion job.  What do you love to do?  No matter what happens or time of day or night you will do this (it may be more than one thing).  There is nothing wrong with multiple streams of income.  What will you do for free?  You love it so much you are willing to just bless people with it.  Have you ever received a jar of cookie mix over the Thanksgiving through New Year Holidays?  If you love to bake this is such an easy gift to make for your friends. What comes easy for you, but hard for someone else?  Sewing comes to mind right here.  You can make anything now a days.  From the very simple to the very extravagant.

When you click the link The Hype you will here this line in the song Don’t Believe The Hype by Public Enemy.  We’re brother of the same kind – the same mind. There is no reason why you are not able to run your own business.  The only thing that stops you is your mindset.  Your mindset is easy to change.  A step a day, a free audiobook for a hour, read fifteen minutes before bed or watch a video while the kids are bathing.  I will not tell you to stop working or going to school.  Do what you do to get your bills paid. Change your mindset from just getting by to making as much in your own business as you do on your job.  YOU CAN DO THIS!  Don’t Believe The Hype.

I Am Ready For A Change

My life took a change for the better on September 10, 2013 and then it got pumped up in September of 2014.  Yes, those two dates changed my life.  We all have those destiny changing moments in our lives that walk in a say BLAM!!!  Deal with it.  I don’t know how spiritual you are, but just let me say I was forewarned I just didn’t listen.  So here I am no job and then no home.  Where do I go from here?  It’s funny, I come from a family of fighters.  They have owned their own businesses and work against all odds to not only get a Masters, but a Doctorate in their field.  So where do I go?  Nowhere but up.  I have started from scratch more than once and this is not going to beat me this time either.

So why do I say all of this?  Because there is someone that needs to read this and get up off their rusty dusty and move.  Every time I fall I get up dust myself off and move.  What got me here?  What do I have that can get me back on track?  What do I have to do to get started?  Find it and move.  We all have a passion for something.  The Author of “Think And Grow Rich, A Black Choice” Dr. Dennis Kimbro formulates finding your passion in four questions:

  1. What is it that I love to do?
  2. What would I do for free?
  3. What comes easy for me, but difficult for somebody else?
  4. Ask yourself, your friends and your neighbors; What do you see me as?  What do you think I would be good at doing?

You may find out like me that there is not just one thing.  You may be talented enough to have multiple streams of income.  Figure out what it is you want to get out of life and define your ambitions. Find your light at the end of the tunnel to guide you through each day and provide yourself with the motivation you need to become (feel) successful.  The solution I found that works is to write out my goals, from the small ones to the overly ambitious, monumental goals.  I remind myself daily what they are.  I feel that writing them down helps me remember.  I must admit I have some of them written and I also have pictures of things I want and places I want to go, but ever day I wake up my goals are there.  I’m not where I want to be and I’m not making the money I want to make.  For me that is reason enough to start my work day.  My Inspiration is first on the docket.  This keeps me focused.  I eat my first meal and read something that is going to make me grow.  Second I get dressed and go outside.  Rain or shine, cold or hot, I have to connect with nature.  I breathe and stretch say thank you for one more chance and come in ready for work. Third I open my to-do list put my head down and go at it.  I love music so I have it on and work for a good hour.  Fourth get up and walk, do chores or go out for a meeting.  Exercising or breaking the pace will help your think pattern.  My fifth and last thing is meditation.  Your brain does not stop.  Put something worthy in your subconscious before your sleep.  Give your brain something to do while you sleep you will wake up ready to go.
